Questions to Ask Your Dentist

Going to the dentist may not be something you look forward to. Though it’s common to feel nervous before an appointment, it’s really important to visit your dentist at least twice a year (every six months). Your dentist can help keep your teeth clean, identify any oral health problems early on, and answer any questions you have. Your dental provider can also help you overcome any concerns, such as dental anxiety.
When you visit your dentist, whether it’s your first time in a while or you were there within the last year, have an open line of communication. Doing so can help ease any anxiety you may feel. Let your dentist know about any oral pain or discomfort you’ve been having. Be honest about your dental habits, like how often you brush and floss.
If you feel uncomfortable before or during an appointment, it can help to ask the following questions:
- What can I expect from my appointment today?
- Will I need X-rays?
- How is my overall oral health?
- What does it mean if I have changes in my gums or pain in my mouth?
- How can I best take care of my teeth and gums at home?
- What toothpaste/toothbrush should I use at home?
- How do I promote good oral health for my children or those in my family?
- If I want to whiten my teeth, what is the best way to do so?
- What foods should I avoid to keep my teeth healthy?
Knowing how to best take care of your oral health at home can help you stay healthy and free of any problems. And this, in turn, can help lessen any anxiety you may feel when going to the dentist. Remember, even when you take great care of your oral health, it is still important to go for routine visits.
Next time you’re at the dentist, try asking these questions. If you continue to experience anxiety over going to the dentist, it’s okay to share your concerns with your dentist. They can help by explaining the process beforehand. Try some deep breathing exercises or meditation to help, too.
This is your chance to take steps forward in improving your oral health. You got this!
